Review: (The) Melvins With Napalm Death – Savage Imperial Death March

(The) Melvins With Napalm Death

Savage Imperial Death March

Ipecac Recordings

When whispers of this collaboration album came through, our feelings went from, β€˜what the fuck!?’ to, β€˜actually that makes total sense.’ Here’s why: both Melvins and Napalm Death are ostensibly experimental punk guitar bands, and, as much as they’re linked with heavy metal (much as Motorhead was), they transcend genre ties. This album had its first limited release via Amphetamine Reptile almost a year ago, but it was far too good to languish in obscure collector’s item land. So now Ipecac Recordings brings us the full version, and what a treat it is for fans of both bands. From the outset, the incendiary β€˜Tossing Coins Into The Fountain Of Fuck’ splits the sound 50/50 between the acts, and this continues throughout. β€˜Some Kind of Antichrist’ is a Barney and Buzz duet! However, dispel any ideas of duet in the romantic ballad way, of course. This riotous stomper collapses into far psychedelia around the four-minute mark, hitting you like your drink had been spiked. Elsewhere, ‘Nine Days Of Rain’ is the sound of the entire world collapsing, and more experimental excursions like β€˜Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy’ will excite the minds of the adventurous and perfect noise bombs β€˜Rip The God’ and β€˜Stealing Horses’ will have fans punching the air with joy. This collaboration does not disappoint and is the noise we will plug into time and time again.
