Having secured all sorts of accolades with their debut album, Leeds-based band Din Of Celestial Birds go one step further with their latest offering, Takeoffs & Landings, a fully fledged concept album revolving around the theme of travel (whether short hops or the journey through life). Oftentimes, albums linked thematically can get so bogged down in the details that they never really get off the ground, meaning the whole can get sacrificed for the parts. In that respect, Din Of Celestial Birds being an instrumental band has definitely helped Takeoffs & Landings; with no vocalist to act as a guide, the listener is propelled forwards by the album’s perpetual motion. As with time itself, songs such as ‘Migratory Patterns’ have an elasticity and mirror the flow of life, sometimes at a snail’s pace, at others with rapidity, but always wending towards an unknown destination. The band displays their uncanny knack for picking just the right tone and timbre, employing notes that resonate deep within the listener, and, along with the inherent rhythms, makes for a very interactive experience. Who knows where Din Of Celestial Birds might travel next musically, but for now enjoy their Takeoffs & Landings.
